In celebration of this year’s first truly sunny week and the nearing (official) arrival of spring, I thought it was only fitting to showcase this new Marc Jacobs “Plant a Seed” Charity Frame. They are bio-based sunglasses, made from a material derived from castor-oil seeds. The chocolate coloured sunglasses, which feature green, leaf textured temples, are packaged in a chic case made from repurposed leather.

But other than funktastic style and eco-friendly materials, what’s behind these shades? Well, funny you should ask! Marc by Marc Jacobs is supporting the Nature Conservancy, the global conservation organization working to protect ecologically important lands and waters, through a new program called “Plant a Seed – Grow Your Tree and Save the Forest.” Really amazing project, albeit not the catchiest name.

Hilary Park Jewelry

Bree and I recently went to an amazing jewelry preview in Williamsburg and perused some handmade, sustainable baubles made by the talented Hilary Park. Amazingly, Hilary makes her jewelry by hand on an old-fashioned anvil, which, when you see her work is truly impressive. I asked her how long it usually takes her to make a bangle, for example, and she said about one day! All of Hilary’s stones are sourced to be cruelty-free and I love the old fashioned methods she uses, which makes of her stuff that much more unique.

So, technically these are men’s sunglasses, but what do I care? I’m all about menswear for women and in my opinion 99% of shades can go on both male and female faces. These sunnies, made in collaboration by The Old Bushmills Distillery, Bodega and Shwood are not only stylish, but also recycled from wood taken from White Oak Bushmills Irish Whiskey barrels that are over 100 years old. A solid way to recycle said barrels in my opinion. These shades go for $225 at bdgastore.com, so if you’ve got the cash, buy a pair and tell us how they feel…and smell. We’re curious to know if they’ve got a hint of whiskey about them.

I wore this outfit a while ago, photographed it and then got lazy and never actually posted. But today is not a lazy day for me, so here you go! I’m super into collars lately and have been throwing a basic white button-up under everything I wear to get a cute collar peeping out the top. Most of what I’m wearing here is vintage including the amazing Oscar de la Renta blouse I’ve got on. I saw this on the rack and thought “granny-chic” so I knew I had to have it! My pants are a really gorgeous blue with a hint of green and an awesome tweed-like texture — also a vintage find. I wish you could see the color better but my apartment building is ridden with disgusting yellow light. I need to take more outdoor photos, I know. Anyway, my belt is a thrifted reversible Hermes and my necklace, which I’ve worn before, is a family heirloom.

Hope you like!

XOXO,

Zanna

Last week we stopped by Coterie to see the latest from CARRIE PARRY. We’d seen runway pictures from Carrie’s big win at Amsterdam Fashion Week, but the collection was even more killer in person. The wool fabrics were super light and breezy — great for this non-winter we’ve been having — and the blouses were flowing and silky. Of course, the mix of neutral prints with color is clearly amazing here. This is definitely Carrie’s most vibrant collection yet and we love seeing her evolution as a designer. As always there are incredibly versatile pieces like the vest-dress seen on one of the models above (second from the right). This can be worn as a vest, a light jacket or a dress, so sustainability was considered all the way from sourcing textiles to how a woman could get the most wear out of each piece.

This is only a preview of the whole collection, but how cute are all of these models? Carrie used real fashionable ladies for the lookbook and it looks like they had so much fun!

Recently, Global Green USA hosted their 9th Annual Gala and Miss Emmy Rossum showed her lovely face on the green carpet. I love that she is supporting Global Green, the American affiliate of Green Cross International, and I also love that she donned this gorgeous yellow confection by Oliver Tolentino. Tolentino specialized in creating pieces made from unusual materials such as pineapple fibers and banana trees, to name a few. I was so enamored by Rossum’s adorable, retro dress and her support for sustainable fashion that I was inspired to create a look around it.

So, I did. And as it turns out, I’m apparently more obsessed with Downton Abbey than I thought because out of my styling came this look, which is so DA, don’t you agree? Mary would totes wear this parading around the Abbey.

How did we miss, Missi Pyle? Update: Pyle also wore an eco-conscious (and gorgeous) gown to the 84th Academy Awards last night. Her dress was designed by Valentina Delfino who won the Red Carpet Green Dress contest where designers competed for their sustainable gown to debut on the red carpet. Pyle’s dress was cruelty-free and made of mineral-dyed silk.

So, today everyone already has their Best and Worst dressed list up from last night’s Academy Awards. Well, I found it quite easy today to pick my two favorite women (standing together, above, in the blurry camera photo(?)) as they were the only two ladies to rock eco-friendly gowns at the Oscars.

As part of the Green Carpet Challenge both Livia Firth, and her most recent recruit, Meryl Streep, wore gowns of the sustainable persuasion.

Here they are in all their glory, proving you can wear killer looks and still be responsible. We just wish more celebs would jump on the bandwagon!

Livia’s gown is a custom Valentino made with  recycled PET fabric and Valentino’s house silk. Meryl’s gold confection is a custom Lanvin made with Eco Certified Fabric sourced with help from the GCC.

Amazing!

Did you watch?

I’m loving the Spring/Summer 2012 lookbook by noir, a Danish label established in 2005 on the vision of making meaningful and desirable consumption possible for the modern conscious fashion consumer.

Per their website, the inspiration for this collection was found in old stories of life at sea and the many beautiful details found on a ship, such as the beauty of tall masts with sails fluttering in the wind and the fascinating functionality found in the gatherings, seams and constructions.
A main focus in the collection is on the idea of working with two layers; an outer layer, which is voluminous like sails and an inner layer, which works as a “second skin.” This idea of a “second skin” also inspired the prints of the collection, which have a clear point of reference in the scales of fish and their complex formations. Check out my favorites below or peruse the full lookbook here.
